Illinois Department of Insurance Issues COVID-19 Auto Data Call

On March 16, 2022, the Illinois Department of Insurance (DOI) distributed a letter issuing a COVID-19 auto insurance data call. The information requested is intended to provide consumer transparency related to the quarterly performance results of the immediate timeframe surrounding the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The DOI’s action follows a request from sixteen Illinois state legislators and nine consumer advocacy groups submitted earlier this year, calling for the DOI to collect data on auto insurance premiums during the pandemic and to urge auto insurers to provide additional refunds.

The Illinois DOI requests companies to submit the data call information electronically to the Department at DOI.MarketConduct@illinois.gov by May 15, 2022. The specific information requested is outlined within the data call letter, and the DOI has provided an Excel spreadsheet for companies’ use. All data collected will be considered non-proprietary and will be made public, except for “Earned Vehicle Exposures,” which will be made public in the form of a weighted average frequency across all companies but will not be released publicly on an individual company basis. The data received will be made publicly available on the DOI website no later than June 30, 2022.

Questions regarding the COVID-19 auto insurance data call can be directed to Erica Weyhenmeyer, Illinois Department of Insurance Assistant Deputy Director & Chief Market Conduct Examiner, at Erica.Weyhenmeyer@illinois.gov.
