Introducing FLAMES...the Groundbreaking, Data-driven Way to Measure Public Fire Risk

Non-cat fire claims account for more than $25 billion in loss every year…impacting businesses and families across the country. Despite advances in risk calculation and mitigation across the industry, underwriters have assessed the public fire protection aspect of fire risk much the same way for decades, using simplistic methods and high-level data to create a generalized rating system.

In response to the needs of our Member carriers, AAIS took a rigorous analytical approach to solving this decades-old problem, to create the Fire Loss and Mitigation Evaluation Score (FLAMES). FLAMES now provides insurance carriers and regulators a more accurate picture of fire risk. Learn more here.

FLAMES Feature Module

Landmark Fire Risk Model Gains Regulatory Approval.

FLAMES assigns a score for each ZIP code and line of business, which makes it simple for underwriters to integrate the score into established workflows.

The geographic footprint of a ZIP code varies with population density with more populated urban and suburban areas typically having small geographic areas and greater insured exposure.

FLAMES will initially launch as part of our Florida Homeowners By-Peril (HOBP) program, but will be built out to include more lines of business and geographies.

FLAMES Body

FLAMES is rooted in data, is flexible & scalable, and is community-driven…

Data Driven.
The AAIS team evaluated data on weather, crime, economic activity, fire stations, hydrants, traffic patterns, population density, building stock characteristics, and vacancy rates, as well as claims and premium data from select carriers and input from the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS).

Extensible.
FLAMES will be continually updated and fine-tuned in response to new data, market dynamics and shifting loss drivers, and will be refined for local jurisdictions, lines of business, and regulatory requirements.

Member-Focused.
FLAMES was built for Member carriers as a decision-making aid for fire risk.  Our focus on open-source development and building a like-minded community of practice means our Members will have an active role in shaping the future of the development of FLAMES.

All you'd expect from AAIS, the modern Member-focused advisory organization.

We are excited to have regulatory approval from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (FLOIR) for FLAMES to be used as part of our Florida Homeowners By-Peril (HOBP) program. FLAMES is a flexible countrywide model with broad applications across other jurisdictions and lines of business.
